The Roebling Suspension Bridge over the Ohio River is one of those structures that improves with context. I found this angle through the trees on the riverbank — the branches and foliage framing the south tower and the sweep of the cables beyond it — and understood immediately that the trees were doing compositional work the photograph needed. Unframed, the bridge is impressive. Through the trees, it reveals itself.
I love how natural framing changes your relationship to a subject. The branches force you to look through something to reach the bridge, which slows the eye down and makes the arrival more deliberate. The cables disappear into the distance in both directions, and the stone tower rises through the gap in the canopy with the particular authority that 19th-century engineering carries. It's been there longer than the trees, and it will likely outlast them too.
