Along the edge of the lagoon, where the cypress trees rise straight from the black water, spring announces itself in the most unambiguous terms. I arrived at this bank on a still morning and found the scene I had been hoping for: the tall trunks striped in silver light, the azaleas behind them in full, unapologetic bloom, and the surface of the water just quiet enough to hold a reflection.
There is a wildness to this particular corner of the garden—less manicured than the lanes and bridges, more given over to the natural architecture of cypress and vine and flowering shrub. The color, when the azaleas are at their peak, is almost too much for the eye to organize at first. Red against gray bark. Magenta against dark water. It takes a moment to find where to rest. And then the composition settles itself, and you understand why this place has held painters and photographers for well over a century.
I worked in close and let the vertical format carry the height of those trunks up into the frame. The result is an image that feels immersive—as though you are standing at the edge of the water yourself, surrounded by that particular stillness that only exists between the trees, just after the mist has lifted and before the day has fully decided what it wants to be.
