Heavenly High

The desert doesn't offer many opportunities for shelter or softness. When you find both in a single moment, you stop. You wait. You watch the light do what it came to do.

I arrived at this weathered chapel as the day was beginning to turn. The sky was already shifting—blue deepening overhead, warmth gathering at the horizon. The structure stood alone against the rugged mountains, its patina of age visible in every weathered board, every streak of oxidation on the metal roof. This wasn't a restored building or a carefully preserved artifact. It was simply still standing, still present, still offering a kind of grace to the harsh landscape around it.

What drew me in wasn't the architecture itself but the atmosphere building around it. The light was beginning to gather intensity at the edges of the frame, painting the clouds in gradients of peach and rose against the deepening blue. The old piano in the foreground—keys exposed to the elements, wood silvered by sun and wind—created a visual anchor, a reminder of community and gathering in a place where isolation is the norm.

I set up my composition to let the chapel rise naturally into the frame, its steeple pointing toward the transitioning sky. The long exposure allowed the clouds to soften and streak, giving movement to an otherwise still scene. The desert floor, scattered with creosote and stone, grounds the image in place—this is clearly somewhere specific, somewhere remote, somewhere untouched by the rush of modern life.

Desert Chapel at Golden Hour is about perseverance and presence. It's a reminder that beauty often exists in places we might overlook, in structures that have earned their character through decades of endurance, in moments when light transforms the ordinary into something quietly extraordinary.
